The national costume of Catriona Gray in Miss Universe 2018 has this elaborate details and the meaning revealed.
As part of the pre-pageant competition, candidates from different countries showcased their national costumes.
For the Filipina beauty queen, she wore a costume which was named “LuzViMinda”.
Based on the article published on PEP, Cartriona featured the characteristics of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in her costume.
Every detail in her wardrobe has a meaning, from headdress down to her boots and her massive backdrop.
Her costume also followed the theme “Magdiwang, Lumaban, Pagyamanin.”
Carlos Buendia Jr., Catriona’s mentor, and fashion designer Jearson Demavivas named the costume after the three major islands of the Philippines.
Through a series of Instagram post, Carlos explained the meaning of every detail.

The backdrop was inspired by the famous parols of Pampanga. According to the post of Jearson, Eric Quiwa, an artisan from Floriblanca, Pampanga, created it.
Carlos elaborated that at the back of the parol is a “painting with an inscription of the of the lyrics from ‘Lupang Hinirang,’ the Philippines’ National Anthem written in Baybayin (Ancient Filipino Alphabet).”
In addition, the suit of Catriona Gray represented the Visayas with “Lumaban” concept.

“The tattoos represent an individual’s journey and public testimony recounting acts of combat, bravery, and strength, the perfectly represents the courageous and resilient Filipino spirit amidst the trials we face in this day and age,” Carlos explained.
Jearson created the pintados suit of the Catriona.
The Miss Universe Philippines 2018 represented the Mindanao region with her boots and headdress.
“Pagyamanin” is the theme of Catriona’s footwear and headpiece.
“The woven textiles express a strong belief in ‘ancestral and natural spirits’ and ‘cultural roots’ of indigenous communities that remain well-preserved up to this day,” Carlos elaborated.
